As with the rest of the country, the political forces in Maharashtra are also in the process of realignment and as such, no party is really sorry to see these elections postponed. An indication of the emerging alignments came from Kolhapur where the Janata Dal, PWP and the leftists, with the tacit support of Congress(I), have formed a joint front to contest the ZP elections. It is also reported that secret talks are on between Congress(I) and Shiv Sena to carve out spheres of influence in the forthcoming elections. It is not without significance that only the Bombay Corporation, controlled by Shiv Sena, was blessed with an extension of its life by the Sharad Pawar government.
