A few years back, the government arrogated to itself the right to grant permission for the open- ing of a new college, driving yet another nail in the coffin of university autonomy. Considering the fact that most of the senior functionaries of universities are essentially government nominees, it was no wonder that this step was accepted by the university authorities with only a feeble protest. The students' and the teachers' bodies in the state also, quite vocal on many other issues, have not concerned themselves with this one.
