GUJARAT ALKALIES Sharpening Competition GUJARAT ALKALIES AND CHEMICALS proposes to produce super dense variety soda ash, caustic potash and potassium carbonate as insurance projects to meet with the fluctuating demand of caustic soda market. The management is also examining the feasibility of diversifying into the surfactant detergent line by establishing a unit of secondary aikane sulfonate. Besides, the company is planning to participate in the Gujarat petrochemicals complex which is expected to be taken up shortly. Meanwhile, the soda ash and cold box projects including second photochlorination unit in respect of chloromethanes project are likely to be commissioned in the first quarter of 1988. Work regarding captive power plant of Gujarat Industries Power Company in which the company is participating alongwith some other industrial units is expected to go on stream on schedule. The Week's Companies During 1986-87, company's sales expanded from previous year's Rs 48.03 crore to Rs 60.35 crore but gross profit declined from Rs 8.69 crore to Rs 6.80 crore. These figures reflect a marked contraction of margins which the directors attribute to severe competition in the market for caustic soda lye and chlorine throughout the year. Net profit amounted to Rs 3.03 crore (Rs 4.16 crore). The unchanged dividend of 26 per cent was covered 1.30 times by earnings as against 1.80 times previously.
