February 22, 1986 only a temporary shift or switch-over from dollar to yen in anticipation of the likely decline in the dollar's exchange rate after it had peaked in February 1985. To the extent this is what has happened, there could well be a shift away from the Japanese banks once the dollar's value reaches what is regarded as a sustainable level. Still, given the prospects of continuing US budget and payments deficits, it is unlikely, at least for the next five years or sot for US banks to regain the commanding position they once held.
