On an average of months basis, the wholesale price index rose by 7.9 per cent in 1983, which was three times the rise recorded in 1982 (Table 2). Major contributions came from cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables, tea, oil- seeds, gur and edible oils. These seven commodities/groups, which account for about 33 per cent of the weight, contributed 66 per cent to the rise of 7.9 per cent in the general price level.
