It is curious that the government has had little thought to spare for all this, even as it has been trying so hard through a variety of measures, including sharp reductions in excise duties, to bolster up the demand for selected consumer durables of upper income consumption, whose collective impact on the economy or on industry can at best be little more than negligible.
