Steel Non-Market Distortions THE Joint Plants Committee (JPC) has once again hiked the prices of a wide range of steel items effective from luly 24. This is the third price hike effected by the JPC since April 1982 when the Union government terminated administered prices in steel. Prices of most iron and steel items were revised upwards right after priee decontrol was made effective. A second price rise was effected in October 1982 in the name of rationalisation. While the first price hike covered only 36 per cent of the total tonnage planned to be produced, the second one covered 60 per cent of production, besides pig iron, and was substantially varying from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 per tonne for different items.
