BALRAJ PURI's article, "Autonomy and Participation: Dimensions of Indian Muslim Identity", in your October 7, 1978 issue leaves one in absolute confusion. Having read through the relatively long article, amazed by the gratuitousness of some of the statements, puzzled by both the contradictions and the lack of historical perspective, one is left wondering what exactly Puri is trying to say. To begin with, one is unclear as to what sort of autonomy and participation is "being referred to, religious, social, economic, cultural or political, or a combination of some or all of the above.
