MAHARASHTRA Bonded Labour Continues Husain Dalwai DESPITE the state government's claim that the system of bonded labour does not exist in Maharashtra, bonded labour does prevail, especially in the districts with a predominantly adivasi population such as Thane, Kulaba, Nasik, Dhulia and Ohaudrapur. Due to loans taken for marriage, death, festivals, and even for repaying government loans, bonded labour has conic to stay in all parts of rural Maharashtra. Many Dalits and Kumbis of Ratnagiri district too are victims of this system. For this reason, more detailed surveys of this phenomenon are necessary.
