THE revolutionary changes in Portugal, which after April 25, 1974, drew ever more sections of the society into its process of rapid transformation, reached a critical stage at the beginning of September 1975. It had also become quite obvious by then that the bourgeoisie, both in Portugal and in Western Europe, would not tolerate a socialist revolution on NATO's south-western flank. For that would not only break the rule of the bourgeoisie in Portugal, it looked as it might indeed manage to set up the first model of a true people's democracy based on people's power and participation in contrast to the parliamentarian 'pluralistic democracies' of the capitalist market economies of stern Europe.
