THE Kolaba Zilla Parishad has discovered, after a survey, that 20 per cent of the small-holders (under 5 acres) are no longer cultivating their land because they have handed over their plots to those who gave them loans.., . On enquiry by the ZP autho- rities, according to the ZP chairman, H M Wangare, it was found that the small-holders had 'parted' with their lands by taking small loans amounting to a lew hundred or a thousand or two rupees. The price of land is as high as Rs 15,000 an acre. Another discovery is that the loans are not taken from the traditional money lenders hut from the bigger landlords, of whom there are one or two in every village. "The new type of moneylenders, the bigger landlord, has emerged in the village now", Mr Wangare told reporters at Murud last week.
