ASSAM- Man-Made Famine

ASSAM Man-Made Famine Prabir Baishya ON OCTOBER 31, 1974, was completed one year of the official take-over of wholesale trade of rice and paddy in Assam. It was a year of severe food shortage in the state. Official estimates are that 500 people died of starvation. But this is something of an understatement. Non-official sources claim that more like 5,000 died of starvation in the state in 1974. The number of destitute camps, run by government and non-government organisations, in the Dhubri sub-division of Goalpara district and the Barpeta sub-division of Kamrup district, are pointers to the critical food situation in the state.
