THE goal of self-reliance has evaporated in the face of the economic crisis. It is with considerable pride that the Finance Ministry recently noted that "judging by the encouraging aid trends, foreign aid availability this year would be higher by Rs 50 crores than the Budget estimate or Its 552 crores". The government is clearly oft to get all the aid, including food aid, that it can. Inevitably, the doors are to be opened wider for foreign private investment as well. The concerned circles in the government, according to newspaper reports, are satisfied that the exit of Nixon from the American presidency will result in an increase in the flow of American private invest-ment to India.
