The Prime Minister, the statement says, realises that there are broader issues involved in Maruti. It is not just a car project initiated by an individual. It is not even a bland symbol of so much first-order and second-order nepotism: that is only a minor aspect of the matter. It has a much broader, greater import namely, whether or not this nation ought to take at face value the exhortation to economise and conserve resources. Everybody from the Prime Minister down talks of the crisis the country is passing through. Each official statement dilates on the theme of abstinence, and on the need to push up the national rate of savings. What you consume, you do not save. If you consume in the way of having more of private passenger cars, to that extent you deviate from the goal of augmenting national savings. Thus Maruti could not only use up precious reiources which might be used for higher national priorities; if permitted to go ahead, it would also release the flood-water of indulgence; once you permit Maruti, you will have no moral grounds to prevent similar other projects to go ahead. The Prime Minister, the press note says, recognises only too well that ultimately her call for sacrifice on the part of each and every member of the nation must be backed up by firm practice; she has decided that she must really set the example for others by taking this personal decision
