GUJARAT-Free Hand for Prime Minister

GUJARAT Free Hand for Prime Minister THE victory in the war with Pakistan has completely altered the political situation in Gujarat. Before the war, Congress (O) as a party was still a force to reckon with. It was in fact reinforcing itself, thanks mainly to the widening schisms at all levels within Congress (R). The internal dissensions in the GPCC had eroded Congress (R)'s public image to an extent where the outcome of the forthcoming elections to the assembly in this state was a source of anxiety to the party High Command. For Indira Gandhi this was an altogether unsatisfactory state of affairs, for till Congress (O) was wiped out in its last bastion in Gujarat. it could not be certified as 'dead'. The Prime Minister's concern over party affairs in Gujarat was clear from her decision to spend a day in Ahmedabad to sort out the tangles in the GPCC at a time when the tension on the borders had almost reached the flash-point.
