MORE than two months after Bhutto came to power his lot does not seem to be any better now than it was in the initial stages. The widespread disturbances in Pakistan in the wake of the surrender in Bangladesh and the ceasefire in the West hastened the fall of Yahya Khan and ushered Bhutto in as the new president and chief martial law administrator. Immediately afterwards, organised industry in the country had to cope with serious labour demands. Although there is no news lately about more strikes by labour, the situation is by no means under control. Even more serious are the strikes by policemen in various parts of the country, including Lahore, Peshawar and Hyderabad (Sind). Besides this, there are reports of some NCOs and technicians in the army and the air force also resorting to demonstrations and other forms of direct action in order to redress their grievances.
