The industry began as private proprietary estates, but corporate ownership is now the predominant form. With the industry's economic importance came an element of professionalism in management, notwithstanding the traditional practice of doling out management posts to impecunious sons of the gentry in much the same way that army commissions were at one time sold to younger sons of the British gentry. Why has this element of professional management failed to capitalise on the strength of tea? Why has this section of the corporate sector lacked initiative?
