It is inherent in the socialist system that power resulting from all activity, political and economic, tends to concentrate in the hands of the government. The theory is that the government has no vested interests and will therefore use this power for the welfare of the people, but in practice it can so happen that the government itself develops a vested interest of petty bureaucrats who are more concerned with keeping the fruits of power for themselves. It is in this context that the Swatantra Party opposes the expansion of the public sector. It believes that the Government must not enter into every area of activity or take over all levers of power, political, economic and social. For the nature of sovereign power is such that once acquired it is hard to divest.
