Aid Expectations Being Revised
October 15, 1966 Whatever the magnitude of the Democratic loss in November, the Vietnam war in the past few months has shifted the political dialogue in the United States substantially to the right. Right wing candidates, such as Ronald Reagan (who has open John Birch support for his campaign for the governorship of California) and Lester Maddox (who is the openly racist Democratic candidate for the governorship of Georgia). are perhaps the most graphic indications of the present trend. The growing isolation of the liberals within the Democratic Party, including men like Robert Kennedy and William Ful- bright, and the possibility of a massive liberal defeat in the elections are other indications of this trend.
