What Is So Wrong with Online Teaching?

A university teacher assesses what is wrong in visualising the online space as a place for regular education. In the context of the pandemic, the situation is even worse, not better, for the suitability of online teaching as a surrogate. It also has a particularly heinous effect for women, both female students and female family members. Given the grossly unequal burden of domestic work that women share at home, often the female students would have to take up additional domestic responsibilities during lockdown. In a different situation, enforced carving out of silence and privacy in the cramped domestic space may imply that the mother adjusts her own work-time and domestic schedule silently.

We have watched with disgust and horror the brutal police assault on students during a peaceful demonstration organised by four Left students’ organisations on 2 April 2013 in Kolkata and the subsequent death of Sudipta Gupta, a participant in the demonstration, while in police custody.

The 'Semesterisation' Impasse at Delhi University

The arbitrary and authoritarian imposition of the semester system in the undergraduate courses of Delhi University is nothing but the current manifestation of a market-driven "vision" for Indian higher education. It is part of a move to standardise university education in ways which will make it more elitist and less open to critical thought. The present struggle against "semesterisation" is part of the larger struggle against the surrender of our universities to the logic of the market.
