This is with reference to the letter “ ‘Evergreen’ Revolution” by Jaydev Jana (EPW, 28 May 2016). He has aptly praised the role of technology in increasing agricultural production. But, mere increase in production using technology is not the panacea for the problems of agricultural development.
It was enlightening to read the article “Gandhi before Gandhi: Two Little Prehistories of the Great Soul” (EPW, 26 July 2014) by Sumanyu Satpathy. It throws light on little-known aspects of the Gandhian philosophy and his ideas related to charkha, khadi and swadeshi.
The Economic & Political Weekly is to be appreciated for launching “an occasional column that will take a ‘tongue-in-cheek look’ at economics and society” (“The View from Above,” Postscript, 4 April 2015).
The suggestions of Vijay Jagannathan on “Cleaning the Ganga River: What Needs To Be Done Differently” (EPW, 13 September 2014) are actually not “different” as claimed. And, even if different, they are easier said than done.
