The fact sheets with key results of the National Family Health Survey-5, conducted in 2019–21, from 36 states/union territories were released recently by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. In this article, the authors highlight the emerging population and health issues from the NFHS-5 to monitor the country’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and the key policy issues to strengthen the population and health programmes in the country.

 

Reverse Migration of Labourers amidst COVID-19

Migrant workers returning to native places in COVID-19 times were the host for urban to rural transmission of cases as the migrant-receiving states witnessed over five times increase in the number of districts having a more significant concentration of COVID-19 cases from 1 May to 31 May 2020. There is an urgent need for the skill mapping of the migrant workforce and creating social security schemes to protect them under any socio-economic or health emergency.

Captive Bodies S K Singh KARNATAKA has the distinction of enacting a comprehensive Panchayati Raj Act in the light of the 73rd constitution amendment. The act came into force from May 10, 1993. Since it was the first such enactment after the 73rd amendment, it has succeeded in catching the eye of the friends of the panchayati raj. It has received a wide range of comments covering political, economic, administrative and other aspects. This note analyses some salient features of the act and the related issues.
