A Preliminary Exploration Rakesh Mohan Despite the very significant changes which have taken place since independence in the structure of output from agriculture towards noh-agriculture, the structure of the workforce has been stow to respond to these other structural changes taking place in the economy. At the same time, it is well established now that the pace of urbanisation accelerated during the 1970s. Morphology of Urbanisation in India-Some Results from 1981 Census

The Provisional Population Totals of the 1981 Census reveal a marked acceleration in the pace of urbanisation in India during the decade 1971-81. This paper seeks to place this development in its proper perspective, both in relation to past trends in India as well as in relation to the urbanisation experience of other developing countries. Further understanding of the emerging pattern of urbanisation is sought by the disaggregation of trends upto the state and sub-regional level.

The Indian Agricultural Research System

Rakesh Mohan D Jha Robert Evenson The economic performance of the agricultural sector in most countries has been largely determined by the organised research and extension activity in those countries. An increasing number of studies have established an association between productivity growth (as conventionally measured) and the level of such activities.1 The term 'non-conventional' factors has crept into the related literature to describe these activities.
