KISSINGER REPORT- Another Alliance for Progress

Three years ago these groups were unknown in Honduras, More ominously the Committee for Me Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has reported 31 suspected political murders and 100 disappearances since 1981. In many cases the Committee suspects the security forces. This record can hardly be compared with the tens of thousands dead or disappeared in Guatemala and EI Salvador. Nevertheless . it is significant that until 1981 these deaths and disappearances had not occurred in Honduras, Already citizens are organising in response to these developments. Aside from the CDHR, the Committee of the Families of the Detained and Disappeared (CFDD) holds monthly gatherings. Unions and peasants organisations have also protested recent developments. The leadership of these organisations are under pressure from the security forces. Evidence of this was given during the recent visit of Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Argentina's Nobel Peace Prize winner. During his stay, the police arrested Zenaida Velasquez, president of the CFDD, on the charge that she was a possible threat to Perez's safety. Once Velasquez was realeased, Perez met with her as well as with the head of the CDHR and affirmed KISSINGER REPORT his support to these groups.
