Military Keynesianism under the Obama Presidency

Will the world witness the disappearance of military Keynesianism in the United States under the Obama presidency? A comparative analysis of the options which successive US governments pursued since the 1980s can help discern the extent to which we may realistically expect to see a reduction in the dominance of the military-industrial complex over the US economy.

Capital Concentration in the US Military

An annual defence report in the US shows that there is a high degree of capital concentration among select corporations in the American military sector.

Globalisation and War in Ivory Coast

For many years the Ivory Coast was cited as an example of successful post-colonial development, based largely on the expansion in cultivation of a single agricultural crop, i e, cocoa beans. In the late 1990s, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund imposed structural adjustment programmes on the country. Later the fall in cocoa prices at the farm level and smuggling transformed cocoa into an export product used to finance military campaigns.

Protests against G-8 in Genua

The three-day mass protests in Genua, where the G-8 meeting was being held, were an extraordinary demonstration of international solidarity. Despite the indiscriminate police violence against the protesters, an action which is being heavily criticised all over Europe currently, the protests were effective in posing questions on the legitimacy of G-8 and its deliberations.

System of Disparate Exchange

The Angolan Civil war is illustrative of the close interconnection that today exists between raw materials and civil wars as well as of the trading structure that characterises the system of disparate exchange. Disparate exchange leads not merely to a drainage of resources and wealth from the poorer southern countries to the north, but also to impoverishment and destruction following the influx of weapons of war, bought by warring parties with income from sale of diamonds, oil and other indegenous wealth.

The Race between Ford and Toyota-Struggle for World Dominance

Struggle for World Dominance Peter Custers This paper provides a description and analysis of Japanisation/Toyotism and draws comparisons with the Fordist system of mass production which emerged in the US in the early part of this century. The Japanese regime, and its application by multinationals worldwide, has already heralded a new phase in the process of capital accumulation.

Bangladeshs Flood Action Plan A Critique

A Critique Peter Custers IN 1987 and 1988 Bangladesh faced excessive annual floods which drew broad international attention after the flood- waters reached foreign embassies in Dhaka's Gulshan area. Bangladesh's large donors then, after many years' neglect, got alarmed to the devastations caused by the yearly floods, and sent out teams com- peting to find the proper, permanent 'solution' to prevent future flood damages. Thus, the French government under Mitterrand appointed a team of engineers, and others

Cyclones in Bangladesh-A History of Mismanagement

A History of Mismanagement Peter Custers The 1991 cyclone in Bangladesh not only exposed the previous government's criminal negligence of protective measures against cyclones but also drew attention to its failure to institute land reforms, which has resulted in the poor and landless becoming the worst victims of these periodic disasters.

Women s Labour in Japanese Economy

Peter Custers Japan has for long prided itself on, and has been praised for, maintaining a system of life-long employment with security of jobs and steadily increasing incomes. This paper, based on a month-long tour of factories and workshops, finds a systematic approach to exploitation of women's labour in Japanese capital's international offensive and the Japanese government's policies relating to women labourers.

Gulf Crisis and World Economy

Peter Custers Three clusters of economic interests are at stake in the west Asian situation: the mutually interwoven interests of oil barons, arms producers and bankers.

BANGLADESH-Islamisation and More Aid for the Generals

When General Ershad sought the support of, Jamat-Islam in March he simultaneously announced his resolve to turn Bangladesh officially into an islamic republic This decision deeply hurts the feelings of all those who, with the independence of the country in 1971, had opted for secularism, for separation between religion and the state. The West, which has been so generous with aid for Bangladesh's generals, cannot plead innocence if the terror of 1971 recurs.

Women s Role in Tebhaga Movement

Peter Custers The Tebhaga movement erupted in 1946 in Bengal on the eve of the withdrawal of the British. Although the tide of Tebhaga receded as fast as it rose, the uprising stands out as one of the most important political events in twentieth century Bengal. Among the unique features of the movement is the large-scale participation of women on par with men. The landless and poor peasant women formed fighting troops called nari bahini and took a front rank role in defending the gains of the movement and in countering the repression of the state.
