Job Quotas in the Private Sector

The Left parties' demand for reservation in the private sector must be seen in the context of the gap between the constitutional mandate and manoeuvres by upper castes, bureaucrats and politicians, and the resultant disillusionment of the deprived sections. It is premature to conclude whether this demand will materialise, but it throws up at least four issues that demand attention.

Religion under Globalisation

This paper looks at the interface of religion and globalisation. It points out that the major religions of the world are being used as purveyors of the globalisation agenda and this is often accompanied by an unprecedented flow of funds into the third world. The major consequences of globalisation have been: the transmogrification of traditional religions and belief systems; the beginning of the disintegration of the traditional social fabrics and shared norms by consumerism, cyber-culture, newfangled religions and changing work ethics and work rhythms; the fast spreading anomie forcing an ever increasing number of individuals to fall back upon the easily accessible pretentious religious banalities, and attributing to religion the creation and acceleration of extremist, fundamentalist and terrorist tendencies in the third world countries.

Lawyers' Agitation in Tamil Nadu

Ayodhya Issue and Freedom of Expression

It is dismaying that there has hardly been any reaction in the media to the order of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court against the publication of news reports and comments on the Ayodhya issue by the print and electronic media

Vanniyar Separatism

The vanniyars' case for a separate state stands on loose ground. The movement, nevertheless draws attention to the current absence of a rallying point for a caste-based party in the context of the strengthening multi-caste, multi-party nature of electoral politics.

Sensitising Officials on Dalits and Reservations

Due to a lack of political will and sensitivity, implementation of the provisions for employment reservation for dalits has been far from satisfactory. In Tamil Nadu too, dalits have suffered from the lax approach of the state towards extending reservation benefits. If this situation has to be corrected several issues need to be urgently considered, including dalits' awareness of their rights, sensitising concerned groups, and above all investing in education so that dalits can reduce their dependence on the state in the quest for social equality.

India s Educational Efforts Rhetoric and Reality

P Radhakrishnan R Akila Despite 40 years of planning and the rhetoric in successive plans regarding the importance of education for all sections of society, the government has failed to draw the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women into the mainstream of educational development, 'this is due, in part, to the continuing dominance of the traditionally well-entrenched upper castes for whom one way of ensuring their hegemony is to keep the underprivileged in perpetual ignorance.

Communal Representation in Tamil Nadu, 1850-1916-The Pre-Non-Brahmin Movement Phase

Though communal representation and reservations are often identified with the non-brahmin movement and the Indian Constitution respectively, the evolution of the non-brahmin movement itself was preceded by certain intricate and elaborate processes of over half a century These processes had a direct bearing on communal representation and reservations at the ideational and pragmatic levels as functional imperatives of the colonial administration.

Ambedkars Legacy to Dalits-Has the Nation Reneged on Its Promises

Ambedkar's Legacy to Dalits Has the Nation Reneged on Its Promises?
P Radhakrishnan Ambedkar contemplated various means for liberating the Dalits and enabling their deliverance from depriva- ion and social stigma to development and social respect but his legacy to the Dalits is primarily the constitutional safeguards for the scheduled castes. This paper takes stock of the fate of this legacy with a view to establishing if the nation has honoured it or reneged on its commitments.
