An analysis of the issue of gender equality in the information technology industry in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram using the framework of Amartya Sen's capability approach indicates that the development of the information technology sector in Kerala is bringing about a gradual gendering of engineering education in the state as well as of software employment. However a deeper analysis reveals a clear process of exclusion in career progression.

An understanding of the financial behaviour of private sector companies is necessary if the state government is to devise policies and programmes to improve the productive efficiency of manufacturing activity as well as the climate for long-term investment in the state.
