Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana 2.0

The union government’s flagship programme—the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana—launched in 2016 and revamped in 2020 for providing crop insurance to farmers—needs fundamental and structural changes for its effective implementation. The need of the hour is a more forceful and impactful state involvement in the scheme.

 

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections 2019

Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party’s conscious efforts to colour the state election campaign with national-level issues such as Article 370, or invoke the popular welfare schemes throughout the campaign in order to turn the beneficiaries into its loyal vote bank, it did not gain as much traction this time as it did in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The election results have shown that caste still continues to remain one of the significant factors at the level of local politics. The role of caste and shifting social bases of the political parties in this election can be analysed with specific focus on the consolidation of Maratha votes and shifts in the voting patterns of the Other Backward Classes.

Migrant Labour in Maharashtra’s Sugar Industry

This article summarises the scenario of migration of sugar cane harvesting workers from Beed, a drought-prone district from Marathwada region, Maharashtra. Seasonal and distressed migration of the sugar cane harvesting workers, which happens to be the most vulnerable section of the sugar industry in Maharashtra, remains a largely overlooked arena in scholarly discussions as well as policy circles. Hence this article, based on a study conducted by the Unique Foundation, Pune, seeks to unravel this phenomenon by looking into the socio-economic profile of the migrants, causal factors behind migration and ramifications of the same.
