The discourse of social studies and civics was framed within the earlier paradigm of colonial relations but later adapted to the modernisation framework deemed 'suitable' for developing countries. An alternative critical pedagogy of civics and social studies must recommit itself to the struggle for restoring humanity - to individuals as selves and as members of groups. This alternate pedagogy will take note of home, communities and friends as an ever-present context and will allow for questioning curriculum, its relevance and power.
