Bajaj Auto Workers' Agitation

Workers at the Bajaj Auto's Chakan unit in Pune stopped work for 50 days before unconditionally withdrawing the agitation on 13 August. The union made a controversial demand - cheap equity shares for its members. This article looks at this demand, the questions around the issue of going on strike (in the current economic atmosphere), the ability to sustain it and the lack of adequate state intervention.

Keeper of Maharashtra's Conscience

Narendra Dabholkar (1945-2013) who was shot dead on 20 August not only campaigned relentlessly against the chicanery of unscrupulous godmen but also the ramifi cations of blind beliefs like the exploitation of women, the ill-treatment of the mentally ill under the guise of exorcism and environmentally unfriendly rituals. He did this by building an excellent network of activists, conscious citizens and progressive writers, theatre and fi lm personalities.

Mumbai Elections

The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance triumphed in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections for the fourth consecutive time, in spite of a dismal performance record. The Congress Party did its best to help the alliance win with its infi ghting, openly airing inner-party differences and even acting on them.
