Paradigms in Development Theory-Plea for Labour-ist Approach

Plea for 'Labour-ist' Approach Krishna Bharadwaj Arguing that the commodity-centred approach to the study of economic development lost sight of the tremendous changes taking place in the economic and social conditions of labour, this paper makes a case for the analytical reconstruction of the macro dynamics of development, taking the clue from the political economy of Adam Smith and Marx, both of whom used the 'labour-ist' approach to analyse capitalist accumulation, advance of productive forces, expanding commerce and changing social relations. In this context, certain striking features of the Indian developmental experience, which should find a reflection in analytical exercises, are taken note of.

Unrest in Higher Education The Broader Issues

Issues of pay-scales and promotion have appeared to be at the centre of the unprecedented nationwide strike of university and college teachers. On Certain Theoretical Issues in Classical Political Economy

today, however, is the second implication of Stigler's claim which has a much wider and deeper currency: that Adam Smith is the theoretical progenitor of the later equilibrium theory based on the supply and demand market mechanism. In the current history of economic thought the notion widely prevails that Smith is the precursor of two very divergent streams of thought

Understanding Rural Social Change

"dictatorship by itself, "democracy by itself"; both dictatorship and democracy are used as abstract, absolute concepts, totally opposed. Consequently it opposes the organisation of workers as the dominant class by means of control of state power and democratic mass struggle for the emancipation of workers. In other words, it confounds the dictatorship of the proletariat with a certain form of repressive government associated with certain 'socialist' states whereas the concept refers to the class content of state power and has for its objective the destruction of the existing state apparatus, on which is based the class dictatorship of the bourgeoisie
