Violence and Trust in Police in India

The police are a state institution that citizens are familiar with, but the perception of this institution among the people depends on the amount of trust vested in the police. Empirical application of ordered probit models on the India Human Development Survey-II data set suggests that the recent experience of violence faced by a household affects its trust in the police significantly. The trust varies widely across regions and communities in India, both for households that did or did not experience recent violence. Training the police forces them to approach cases with empathy and a shift to community-based policing may help to bridge the trust deficit.

The Story of Currency in Circulation

The impact of demonetisation on the movement of currency in circulation in India over time is examined. Four different models of currency in circulation are used to estimate these models using weekly data from April 1992 to October 2016. An analysis of out-of-sample forecast performance of these models prior to demonetisation reveals that the series could be forecast well before this event. Out-of-sample forecast errors of these models during the post-demonetisation period are, therefore, interpreted as shocks due to demonetisation. As far as weekly growth rates of the series are concerned, we observe no major change in intra-month seasonality in currency in circulation once the shock due to demonetisation mitigated.

Hyper-Plurality and the Need for Regulation of Candidate Entry in India

It is argued that given the high variation and lack of stability in candidate structure across regions and over time, a local approach on "signature requirement" - as in the United States - could be an effective deterrent to hyper-plurality in candidate entry in elections in India. Accordingly it is suggested that the Election Commission of India should not only have the power to determine the "electoral deposit" before each election, it should also have the power to change the minimum signature requirement across constituencies under certain pre-specified conditions.

We have watched with disgust and horror the brutal police assault on students during a peaceful demonstration organised by four Left students’ organisations on 2 April 2013 in Kolkata and the subsequent death of Sudipta Gupta, a participant in the demonstration, while in police custody.

Sectoral Linkages and Growth Prospects

This paper examines the linkage of growth among the agriculture, industry and services sectors of the economy, using both an input-output (I-O) and a simultaneous equation framework. Despite the substantial increase in the share of the services sector in GDP over the years, the I-O tables suggest that the agricultural sector still plays an important role in determining the overall growth rate of the economy through demand linkages with other sectors of the economy.

Impact of Increase in Oil Prices on Inflation and Output in India

This paper attempts to study the transmission mechanism of an increase in petroleum prices on the prices of other commodities and output in India. The paper also examines the nature and the extent of 'feedback' in such a transmission mechanism and obtains evidence of bidirectional causality between oil and non-oil inflation in India.
