What Do Populist Authoritarians Do When They Rule?

In the times of the generalised ascendance of right-wing populism, it is necessary to have comparative view of right-wing governments and parties. Such an exercise would help discern common patterns of the ideological programme and political practice of these forces.

What Are the Limits?

This article is a brief account of the work over the past three years of the Delhi-based Centre for Policy Analysis in Kashmir, where it started an initiative to connect people in the Valley with actors of political and civil society from the rest of the country over issues that concern Kashmiris. This initiative included bringing students of the national capital together with students of Kashmir and sharing information and perceptions about events in the Valley. The CPA's work has shown that Kashmir and its people are subjects of multiple and coexisting transformations.

India's Foreign Policy Shifts and the Calculus of Power

India's foreign policy is witnessing dramatic shifts. The traditional practice of non-alignment and the multipolar concept are being replaced by new agreements that will lead to military alignments with the United States. India is moving away from the large formations of the non-aligned movement to smaller alliances like the India-Brazil-South Africa alliance. This would completely shift the strategic environment of the south Asian region and have a global impact. The Indo-US Defence Framework and the 123 Agreements are steps in this direction. These agreements curb India's independent foreign policy and entail increased militarisation, greater threat perceptions and instability.
