Why Fear Free Trade in Services?
Jagdish C Saigal IN the current debate in GATT on the proposal to launch a new round of multilateral trade negotiations (New MTN), a major controversy surrounds the services issue- Writing in this connection,1 ISG questions the wisdom of the developing countries in fearing free trade in services and persisting in their opposition to services being brought within the jurisdiction of GATT He suggests that the developing countries should not waste their energies on the question of whether or not to include services as part of the New MTN and that instead, they should concentrate on working out a common position with a view to making sure that the different services that are negotiated in the New MTN include services which are of interest to the developing countries.
