Employee Voice and Collective Formation in Indian ITES-BPO Industry

The growth of the information technology enabled services-business process outsourcing industry calls for attention to employees' working conditions and rights. Can an independent organisation such as unites Pro (the union of information technology enabled services professionals) represent employees' interests and effectively work towards protecting their rights and improving their working conditions? A survey of unites members indicates that they identify with the need for such an organisation to deal with poor supervisory and managerial treatment, concerns for employee safety, grievances related to pay and workload, and even the indignities of favouritism.

Organising Call Centre Agents: Emerging Issues

Organisations in the information technology enabled services sector have been very successful in using exclusivist and inclusivist strategies to keep unions at bay. These strategies have reinforced the notion of culturalism that aims at winning the "hearts and minds" of employees, by managing what they think and feel, and not just how they behave. The objective is to illustrate how these management strategies play out in call centres in India. The article is based on interviews carried out with call centre employees in Bangalore.

Bombay Dock Labour Board 1948-1994

In pre-independent India, dock workers enjoyed little security of employment. Not only was work intermittent, there were no safety provisions while wages varied from contractor to contractor. With the setting up of the Bombay Dock Labour Board, a modicum of social security was provided for against sudden economic crises and during times of recession. Since the 1980s, however, changes that included the emergence of JNPT, subcontracting of workers, new modes of work, implementation of retirement schemes, among other measures have resulted in financial difficulties for the board. This paper deliberates on the conditions of labour that existed in ports of the pre-independence period and then seeks to analyse the impact of globalisation in context of the dock workers.

Displaced Workers and Withering of Welfare State

This article attempts to demonstrate, through a case study, that the ascendancy of new-liberal policies has led to the decline of the welfare state and that this has had an adverse effect on the employment situation and the lives of workers.

Liberalisation and Industrial Relations

The primary conditions for the creation of international division of labour are the availability of cheap labour, an efficient telecommunication system, a worldwide mobilisation of capital and development of multilateral institutions. The process of liberalisation currently under way is directed at creating these conditions. The restructuring of industry, changes in the business environment and the slackening of labour laws in India have to be seen as part of the effort to put a new international division of labour in place.

BJP Cow as a Political Symbol

Ernesto Noronha Though cow as a political symbol lacks the potential to consolidate the Hindu voters, the BJP may continue to use it to enliven the attenuated Ram Janmabhoomi symbol.
