Dipesh Chakrabarty The relation between 'subaltern pasts' and the practice of historicising is not one of mutual exclusion. Subaltern pasts act as a supplement to the historian's pasts and in fact aid our capacity to historicise. They enable history, the discipline, to be what it is and yet at the same time help to show forth what its limits are.

Remembered Villages Representation of Hindu-Bengali Memories in the Aftermath of the Partition Dipesh Chakrabarty This paper discusses a set of essays first serialised in the Bengali newspaper Jugantar from 1950 on and later collected together in 1975 in a book called Chhere Asha Gram (The Abandoned Village'). Written in the aftermath of the partition, these essays capture the sense of tragedy that the division of the country represented to the authors.

READERS will be grateful thai many of the essays Irfan Habib wrote between the 1960s and the 1980s "over a span of some thirty years", says the author have now been brought together in one place Whether one agrees with him or not, there is no question of denying the very distinguished and original contributions that Irfan Habib has made to the study of Mughal-Indian history. The achievement of his youth, Agrarian System of Mughal India, (Bombay, 1963), was a pathbreaking, courageous and magnificent book. The articles collected in this book, however, belong in the main to a later period of Irfan Habib's career when he was, deservedly, called upon to play roles larger thar that of a specialist on Mughal agrarian hiHory, His strengths arc not consistently visible in these essays but as essays from somebody whose commitment and devotion to anti-imperial and pro-people historiography is beyond question, they deserve our serious attention.

Radical Histories and Question of Enlightenment Rationalism Some Recent Critiques of Subaltern Studies Dipesh Chakrabarty Maintaining a critical position with respect to the legacies of the European Enlightenment does not entail a wholesale rejection of the tradition of rational argumentation. The author seeks to demonstrate, in the first part of this note, how a certain form of hyper-rationalism characteristic of colonial modernity has impaired Indian marxists' capacity to engage with 'religion' (something without which India cannot he imagined). The second part of the note argues how colonial histories are particularly helpful in making visible what is sometimes called 'the unreasonable origins of reason'. And the final section endeavours to show without attempting a general defence of post-structuralism why post-structuralist and deconstructionist philosophies are useful in developing approaches suited to studying subaltern histories under conditions of colonial modernities.

Dipesh Chakrabarty The historiographical effort of Subaltern Studies has been described as 'history as critique' and imperialism and imperialist knowledge are seen as the subjects of this critique. By this measure the Subaltern Studies project, which began as an intervention in post-colonial debates in Indian history is at least potentially capable of transforming the very idea of history itself, the discipline that is represented in university departments organised under that name.
