Since this has not been done, J have to respond to S S Sivakumar's review1 of my book on agricultural trade.2 The subject of my book is that of the title and subtitle : the nature and role of agricultural trade in rural development in a south Indian District. I did not set out with the 'central concern' of providing a solution to the problem of quantifying the extraction of surplus value through productive activities of commercial firms.
