This article is based on an investigation into specific cases of "disappearances" conducted by the 20 Grenadiers, a part of an elite regiment of the Indian Army, in Jammu and Kashmir in 1997, with a follow-up of the cases in the high court up to 2004. The role of the police and of the courts are highlighted, especially the latter's ineffectiveness in the face of many obstacles, including the immunity granted to the armed forces by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The cases discussed are of contemporary relevance, since "disappearances" continue even to this day.
