Ageing: A Comparison

An Ageing India: Perspectives, Prospects and Policies edited by P S Liebig and S Irudaya Rajan; Haworth Press, New York, 2003;
ANUPAMA DATTA Ageing has been the preoccupation of the west, but developing countries like India are also beginning to feel the challenges of an ageing population. In the next 50 years, the elderly will become 21 per cent of the total population in the country, so there is an urgent need to pay attention to these issues. This book is an attempt to acquaint the western reader about facts of ageing in India and also to draw comparisons between India and north America. It has accomplished the first objective well but drawing comparisons between India and north America (the differences are too many to be of any comparative value) seems far-fetched.
